What are EMDR intensives?
Jul 02, 2022EMDR Intensives are a flexible model of therapy to provide clients with quick and effective support. EMDR intensives utilize personalized treatment plans that zone in on very specific treatment goals and are designed to bring relief in a short period of time.
EMDR intensive sessions can vary in length, depending on the provider. As the therapist, this means you can design your intensive sessions to meet your needs and your client's needs. Intensive sessions are typically 2+ hours in length. Right now, I enjoy doing 3 hour long intensive sessions.
EMDR intensive sessions can be provided in an ongoing format, working "intensively" with clients. This might look like meeting with a client once or twice each month for an intensive session. EMDR intensive sessions can also be provided in a short term format. This might look like meeting with a client two or three times during one week to address the identified goals quickly.
EMDR intensives can be a great way to offer adjunct EMDR therapy services. This can be useful for when a client has a primary therapist and they have identified an issue that is stuck or a trauma that needs to be addressed with EMDR. EMDR intensives are also a flexible alternative for when a client's schedule does not allow for weekly therapy appointments.
Research supports the effectiveness of EMDR intensives!
An intensive treatment format seems to be well tolerated, safe, and effective for addressing severe PTSD and complex trauma histories. Patients experienced relief and reduced risk for prematurely ending treatment. Learn more here, here and here.
